A sinfully decadent, yet guilt-free recipe to enjoy chocolate for breakfast
.
.
Every so often, I swap my standard Sunday morning breakfast of oats and fruit for a bowl of creamy chocolate avocado pudding. This is one of my favourite ways of enjoying avocado, and it is easy to see why.
Dark chocolate has that elusive combination of a complex bittersweet taste, which I swear, is enough of an incentive for me to find more ways of incorporating it in more recipes other than just chowing it down, piece by piece…although I would happily chow it down piece by piece until my pantry is empty..
.
The combination of the deep, bittersweet and complex flavours of raw cacao powder, the creamy decadence of whipped avocado, and the smoky heat of berbere is one which I am powerless to resist – true confession!
.
.
And speaking of Berbere, this is the secret ingredient in this recipe. I am talking about berbere that has been carefully mixed and blended so it delivers a deep, earthy and rich flavour with a hint of heat. My girlfriend Esete hand-delivered my current batch of berbere spice, ground by her mum in Ethiopia based on an age-old recipe. The result – a very vibrantly-coloured and intensely-flavoured spice which I have been enjoying with reckless abandon.
Raw Cacao powder is also loaded with antioxidants and ranks as one of the healthiest superfoods. Avocados are 75% fat, most of which are monounsaturated (the healthy fat), and contain oleic and linoleic acid which aid with stabilising blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
.
Which means you end up with a breakfast that’s nutrient-dense and capable of keeping you feeling full for longer because of the high fat content. Now tell me please what’s not to love?

.
- 1 avocado medium-size
- 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 100 ml coconut milk

- Eat immediately or refrigerate for a few hours for a thicker texture.
